Peer Support & Community Involvement

Peer-led group

PeerNetBC has been helping people connect since 1986, providing resources for peer groups and peer-led initiatives. Our resources and services are available for community members and groups across British Columbia, including online, rural, First Nations, multicultural and youth engagement initiatives. PeerNetBC is a non-profit, registered charitable organization.

What do we mean when we use the term “peer-led group”?

A peer-led group is made up of people who choose to come together because they share similar life experiences. They see the value in being part of a group where leadership is a shared responsibility and all members are considered equal in status within the context of the group. Members are the decision-makers and they work together to provide direction. If requested, professionals may provide information and advice but they do not have the power to make decisions on behalf of the group.

PeerNetBC envisions communities where people are connected.

We provide training, resources and support to peer-led initiatives across British Columbia, fostering opportunities for people to learn from each other and make connections.

Our Story

In 1986, the Self-Help Collaboration Project formed to address the needs of the self-help community in BC. The venture took root and soon evolved into the Self-Help Resource Association — a not-for-profit society (1993) and registered charity (1994).

Over the years, as we grew and terminology shifted, the term ‘self-help’ no longer held the same meaning as it had back in the 1980s. Our name no longer accurately reflected the primary focus of our work. In May 2008, after extensive community consultation and many conversations among staff and board, our membership voted unanimously to rename the organization, PeerNetBC. We feel this name better represents the peer-led approach to our work and the value we place on meaningful community networks.
